Overview

Opti-MEM™ Reduced Serum Medium is a modified MEM formulation designed to maximize transfection efficiency while maintaining cell viability under reduced-serum conditions. Its proprietary nutrient composition minimizes the adverse effects of serum deprivation and improves nucleic acid delivery using lipid-based and other chemical transfection reagents.

Unlike conventional growth media, Opti-MEM is intended primarily for short-term transfection workflows rather than routine long-term cell culture.

Key Features

  • Optimized for reduced-serum transfection
  • Supports high cell viability during gene delivery
  • Compatible with DNA, RNA, siRNA, miRNA, mRNA, and CRISPR applications
  • Reduces interference between serum proteins and transfection reagents
  • Widely validated for transient gene expression studies
  • Standard medium for Lipofectamine-based protocols

Best Practices

  • Use healthy, actively dividing cells for optimal transfection efficiency.
  • Prepare nucleic acid-transfection reagent complexes according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Use high-quality, endotoxin-free plasmid DNA or RNA.
  • Optimize reagent-to-nucleic acid ratios for each cell type.
  • Replace Opti-MEM with the routine growth medium after the recommended transfection period unless otherwise specified.
