SOP-030: Response to Cell Culture Spills
Purpose
To provide a standardized procedure for safely containing, disinfecting, and reporting spills involving mammalian cell cultures, culture media, and associated biological materials.
Scope
This SOP applies to accidental spills occurring inside or outside a Class II Biosafety Cabinet during mammalian cell culture procedures.
Responsibilities
The operator is responsible for:
- Responding to spills promptly and safely.
- Preventing the spread of contamination.
- Using appropriate disinfectants.
- Reporting significant spills or exposures according to institutional policy.
Required Materials
Reagents
- Laboratory-approved disinfectant
- 70% ethanol (for final surface cleaning, if applicable)
Equipment
- Absorbent laboratory wipes or paper towels
- Biohazard waste container
- Forceps or tongs (if required)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Procedure
1. Secure the Area
Stop work immediately.
Restrict unnecessary movement around the spill to prevent contamination.
If the spill occurs inside a biosafety cabinet, keep the cabinet operating throughout the cleanup.
2. Wear Appropriate PPE
Before beginning cleanup, ensure appropriate PPE is worn.
Replace contaminated gloves if necessary.
3. Contain the Spill
Cover the spill with absorbent material.
